History & Attractions New Iberia is steeped in history, and you don’t have to travel far to experience it first-hand.
You can feel the Native American, Spanish, and French influences as you stroll beneath the moss-laden majestic oaks along Main Street, visiting the city’s Downtown Historic District and Bouligny Plaza, named for New Iberia’s founding father. All along Bayou Teche, you’ll see for yourself why legend has it that Jean Lafitte buried his treasure beneath the oaks lining the bayou. The Bayou Teche Museum offers exhibits and education about the history of the City of New Iberia, the land, and its uses along the Bayou Teche.
Be sure to visit the McIlhenny Company on Avery Island, makers of the world-renowned TABASCO® hot sauce. While you’re touring the plant, you can also tour the island’s Jungle Gardens and bird sanctuary. Also, do not forget to visit Jefferson Island, where you can find the beautiful Rip Van Winkle Gardens, and home of the actor Joseph Jefferson.
Just down the road, you’ll also find the KONRIKO® Rice Mill; Olivier Plantation Store; sites of Civil War battles; the breath-taking Shadows on the Teche, a National Register property; and several other attractions.
